রংপুর অঞ্চলের উচ্চশিক্ষার জন্য কোনো মহাবিদ্যালয় না থাকায় রংপুর অঞ্চলের প্রসিদ্ধ কুন্তির জমিদার শিক্ষানুরাগী ব্যক্তিত্ব মৃত্যুঞ্জয় রায় চৌধুরী রংপুরে একটি প্রথম শ্রেণীর কলেজ প্রতিষ্ঠার জন্য ১২৫ বিঘা জমি দান করেন। কিন্তু সরকারী অনুমোদন না পাওয়ায় তা বাস্তবায়ন করতে পারেননি।[৮] পরবর্তীতে রংপুর জেলা কালেক্টর জ্ঞানেন্দ্রনাথ গুপ্ত কলেজ প্রতিষ্ঠার ক্ষেত্রে সক্রিয়ভাবে উদ্যোগী হয়ে উঠেন।[২][৯] ১৯১৩ সালে তৎকালীন অবিভক্ত বাংলার গভর্নর লর্ড টমাস ডেভিড গিবসন কারমাইকেল রংপুর এলে তাঁকে নাগরিক সংবর্ধনা দেয়া হয়। সেখানে অত্র অঞ্চলে একটি প্রথম শ্রেণীর কলেজ প্রতিষ্ঠার প্রয়োজনীয়তার কথা জানিয়ে সহযোগিতার জন্য অনুরোধ করা হলে, তিনি জানান এটির জন্য প্রাথমিক পর্যায়ে তিন লক্ষ টাকার প্রয়োজন হবে। কলেজ প্রতিষ্ঠার লক্ষ্যে তহবিল সংগ্রহের জন্য জে.এন গুপ্ত রংপুর অঞ্চলের রাজা, জমিদার, বিত্তবান ব্যাক্তি ও শিক্ষানুরাগীদের নিয়ে সভা ডাকা হয়। কথিত আছে, অর্থ সংগ্রহের জন্য ডাকা সভায় তৎকালীন দানশীল জমিদার ও বিত্তবান ব্যক্তিবর্গ কে কত টাকা দিবেন তা মুখে বলে অঙ্গীকার করেন এবং কাগজে লিপিবদ্ধ করেন। এক্ষেত্রে টেপার জমিদার তার মুখে উচ্চারিত ১০,০০০ টাকা লিখতে গিয়ে টাকার অংকের জায়গায় ভুল করে ডান পাশে একটি শূন্য বেশী বসিয়ে দিয়েছিলেন। ফলে তার টাকার পরিমাণ দাড়ায় এক লক্ষ টাকা। সভা শেষে সকলের লিখিত টাকার অংক যখন পড়ে শোনানো হচ্ছিল তখন অন্নদা মোহন রায় চৌধুরী (টেপার জমিদার) তার অঙ্গীকারকৃত টাকার অংক শুনে বিচলিত হয়ে পড়েছিলেন। কারও কারও মতে তিনি মূর্ছা গিয়েছিলেন। তবে তিনি কলেজ প্রতিষ্ঠায় অঙ্গীকারকৃত টাকার অংকই দান করেছিলেন । এই দানকে স্মরণীয় করে রাখার জন্যই কারমাইকেল কলেজে প্রাচীন স্থাপত্য শৈলীর নিদর্শন দর্শনীয় মূল ভবনের ঠিক মাঝের হল ঘরটির তার নামানুসারে “অন্নদা মোহন হল” নামকরণ করা হয় । প্রতিষ্ঠার জন্য যারা অর্থ এবং জমি দান করেছিলেন তাদের ২৮ জন দাতার নাম পাথরে খোদাই করে লেখা আছে। কেউ কেউ নগদ অর্থ দান করেন। কেউ বা দান করেন জমি অবকাঠামো নির্মাণের জন্য। সবচেয়ে বেশি জমি দান করেন, কুন্তির প্রসিদ্ধ জমিদার ও রংপুরের তৎকালীন সবচাইতে শিক্ষানুরাগী ব্যাক্তি সুরেন্দ্র নাথ রায় চৌধুরী, তারা দুই ভাই প্রায় ৪৫০ বিঘা নিষ্কণ্টক জমি দান করেন[৯] এবং কুণ্ডী জমিদারির অন্য শরিক মৃত্যুঞ্জয় রায়চৌধুরীর ৪২৫ বিঘা, সব মিলিয়ে কলেজের জন্য প্রায় ৯০০ বিঘা জমি পাওয়া গিয়েছিল।[৮]
১৯১৩ সালে রংপুরে গণ সংবর্ধনায় গভর্নর লর্ড কারমাইকেল তিন লক্ষ টাকা সংগ্রহের কথা বলেছিলেন। কিন্তু ১৯১৬ সালের মধ্যেই সংগৃহীত হয় চার লক্ষাধিক টাকা। এরপর ১৯১৬ সালের ১০ নভেম্বর তৎকালীন অবিভক্ত বাংলার গভর্নর লর্ড থমাস ডেভিড ব্যারন কারমাইকেল রংপুরে এসে কলেজের ভিত্তি প্রস্তর স্থাপন করেন। তাঁর নামানুসারেই কলেজটির নামকরণ করা হয় “কারমাইকেল কলেজ”। প্রতিষ্ঠাকালীন সময় থেকে মূল ভবন নির্মাণের পূর্ব পর্যন্ত কলেজের কার্যক্রম পরিচালিত হয় জেলা পরিষদ ভবনে।[৯] এরপর ১৯১৮ সালের ১২ ফেব্রুয়ারি কারমাইকেল কলেজের মূল ভবনের উদ্বোধন করা হয়। জার্মান নাগরিক ড. ওয়াটকিন ছিলেন কলেজের প্রতিষ্ঠাকালীন অধ্যক্ষ।
১৯১৭ সালের জুলাই মাসে কলকাতা বিশ্ববিদ্যালয় এই কলেজে আইএ ও বিএ ক্লাস খোলার অনুমতি দেয়।[১০] উচ্চ মাধ্যমিক বিজ্ঞান ১৯২২ সালে ও বিজ্ঞান বিভাগে স্নাতক ১৯২৫ সাল থেকে শুরু হয়। ১৯৪৭ সাল পর্যন্ত এটি কলকাতা বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ের অধীনে ছিল। দেশভাগের পর ১৯৪৭ সাল থেকে ঢাকা বিশ্ববিদ্যালয় ও ১৯৫৩ সালে নতুনভাবে স্থাপিত রাজশাহী বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ের অধীন করা হয়। ১৯৯২ সাল থেকে আবার জাতীয় বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ের প্রতিষ্ঠার পর এটি তাতে অন্তর্ভুক্ত করা হয়।[৯]
১৯৬৩ সালের ১লা জানুয়ারী কলেজটি সরকারীকরণ করা হয়। এটিকে একটি বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ে রূপান্তরিত করতে ১৯৯৫ সাল থেকে উচ্চ মাধ্যমিক শ্রেণীতে পাঠদান বন্ধ করে দেওয়া হয়। কিন্তু পরবর্তীতে আবার উচ্চ মাধ্যমিক শ্রেণীতে পাঠদান চালু করা হয়েছে।[৯]
Due to the absence of any higher education institution in the Rangpur region, the renowned zamindar of Kundi and education enthusiast Mrityunjay Ray Chaudhury donated 125 bighas of land to establish a first-class college in Rangpur. However, the plan could not be implemented at that time due to lack of government approval.
Later, the District Collector of Rangpur, Gyanendranath Gupta (J.N. Gupta), took active initiatives to establish the college. In 1913, when the then Governor of undivided Bengal, Thomas David Gibson Carmichael, visited Rangpur, he was given a civic reception. During the reception, local leaders requested his support for establishing a first-class college in the region. He stated that approximately three lakh taka would be required initially.
To raise funds, J.N. Gupta organized meetings with local kings, zamindars, wealthy individuals, and education patrons. It is famously said that during one such meeting, donors verbally pledged their contributions and recorded the amounts in writing. The zamindar of Tepa, Annada Mohan Ray Chaudhury, accidentally added an extra zero while writing his pledged amount of 10,000 taka, making it 100,000 taka instead. Although shocked when the amount was read aloud (some say he even fainted), he honored the full pledged amount. In recognition of his generosity, the central hall of the main building was later named “Annada Mohan Hall.”
In total, 28 donors contributed money and land for the establishment of the college. The largest land donation came from Surendra Nath Ray Chaudhury, the prominent zamindar of Kundi, and his brother, who donated approximately 450 bighas of land. Additionally, Mrityunjay Ray Chaudhury donated 425 bighas. Altogether, nearly 900 bighas of land were secured for the college.
Foundation and Establishment
Although Governor Carmichael initially mentioned raising three lakh taka in 1913, more than four lakh taka had been collected by 1916. On November 10, 1916, Thomas David Gibson Carmichael laid the foundation stone of the college in Rangpur. The institution was named Carmichael College in his honor.
Before the construction of the main building, academic activities were conducted at the District Council building. The main building was officially inaugurated on February 12, 1918. A German scholar, Dr. Watkin, served as the founding principal of the college.
Academic Development
In July 1917, University of Calcutta granted permission to open IA and BA classes at the college. Higher Secondary Science classes began in 1922, and undergraduate science programs started in 1925.
Until 1947, the college was affiliated with the University of Calcutta. After the Partition of India in 1947, it came under University of Dhaka, and in 1953 it was affiliated with University of Rajshahi. Since 1992, following the establishment of National University, the college has been affiliated with it.
The college was nationalized on January 1, 1963. In 1995, Higher Secondary classes were temporarily discontinued as part of plans to upgrade the institution into a university. However, Higher Secondary education was later resumed.

২০১৩ থেকে ২০২৫ সাল পর্যন্ত কারমাইকেল কলেজ থেকে মোট ১১,৪০৫ জন শিক্ষার্থী এইচএসসি পরীক্ষায় অংশগ্রহণ করে। এর মধ্যে পাস করেছে ১০,৬০৭ জন এবং ফেল করেছে ৭৯৮ জন। ৩০৫০ জন শিক্ষার্থী জিপিএ ৫ (এ+) অর্জন করেছে। এই সময়ে গড় পাসের হার ছিল ৯৩.০০%, এবং জিপিএ ৫ প্রাপ্তির হার ছিল ২৬.৭৪%।[

Carmichael College is one of the most historic and prestigious educational institutions in Bangladesh. The campus is large, spacious, and beautifully maintained, combining both modern and traditional architectural elements. The college has several academic buildings where classes, laboratories, and lectures take place. Each building is well-planned, with spacious classrooms and well-equipped facilities to ensure a good learning environment for students. In addition to the academic buildings, there are administrative offices, staff rooms, and conference halls that manage the smooth functioning of the college.
The campus also has multiple student dormitories for both male and female students, such as Gopal Lal Dormitory, Kashim Bazar Dormitory, Tapasi Rabeya Hall, Begum Rokeya Hall, and Jahanara Imam Hall. These dormitories are designed to provide students with a comfortable and secure living space. Surrounding these buildings are numerous large trees, green lawns, and flower gardens, which create a calm and refreshing atmosphere for studying and relaxation.
